In September, Paulo and I had the privilege of participating in the inauguration of the new building at First Baptist Church in the city of Tentente Portela, about eight hours from where we live. My Kairos student, Marcos, is the pastor of this church, and it is his first ministry experience. He even invited me to preach on the Sunday. In the last two years as pastor, the church has tripled in size. We had a wonderful weekend celebrating with my student, his wife and family, and the church. It was also fun to meet his youngest son and one of my seminary students in person. While we are thankful for technology that allows us to offer seminary education live online, there is nothing better than seeing my students in the place where they serve the Lord.
In October, along with my missionary colleague and the secretary from the seminary, we had the privilege of promoting Kairos Brazil at the bi-annual state Baptist women’s conference. We were there together with 450 women. Seven women from my home church were also able to attend.
In November, I was invited to speak to our association’s Women’s Missionary Union about women in ministry. I have served in full-time ministry for 30+ years, but this is the first time I have ever been invited to share about this topic! One of the hopes is that we can begin a mentorship program for young women who are called into full-time ministry.
Currently, our church is raising an offering for church planting in our state as part of the annual campaign. We have been trying to find creative ways to contribute to the offering. So, this year, I taught the ladies how to make pancakes, North American style. We had just a couple of small frying pans to get the job done, but they were a huge hit. So, for the first Saturday in December, we are planning to make waffles, which is another unusual dish for Brazilians.
I continue to enjoy using my photography skills to take photos of special events at different churches, as well as special birthdays or anniversaries. Little did I know that Paulo got a photo of me doing something that brings me joy!
