Seminary News

The beginning of August means the start of our second semester at the Seminary. I am looking forward to getting back in the classroom after home assignment. It will be great to catch up with the students I know and meet the new students who have started this year. We begin our semester with a two-week intensive class on Church Planting that will feature professors from North America and New Zealand, as well as Brazilians from our state. I will be learning along with my students as I interpret those who don’t speak Portuguese.

Church News

July was winter camp season, and thanks to the generosity of those of you who gave, we were able to send nineteen to the Word of Life Camp and seven to the TeachBeyond Camp. The true reward comes when we hear the testimonies of these kids and their parents. Ana Cristina, a 13-year-old girl from a low-income family from our church, has been dealing with a serious bout of depression and anxiety since last year. It had been ages since I have seen her smile or got her to talk, but what a change we’ve seen since coming back to Brazil! After camp, she shared with a huge smile on her face that she has renewed her commitment to Jesus! Her dad shared that she is now making sure everyone at home is doing their daily devotionals. She still has bouts of anxiety, but they are much less than before. Celenir, the wife of Pastor Elder, Paulo’s mentor who passed away from Covid, shared that after camp, her son Tito came back different. He told her that Jesus really got a hold of his life at camp. He has had a hard time after losing his dad at such a young age, and we are so grateful that he is finding everything he needs in Jesus!

Personal News

After a year-long break (due to home assignment), I am back to being a student and will be starting my field research for my PhD program. I will begin meeting with a group of women from the Assembly of God denomination. They live and attend church on one of the islands by our city. My contact happens to be the woman who cleans the public space our apartment building. Her husband is one of the church leaders. I am grateful for their willingness to journey with me and look forward to hearing their testimonies.

Paulo and I recently became a great uncle and aunt! Our nephew, Thales, and his girlfriend, Larissa, had a beautiful baby boy named Benício. It’s exciting to see my in-laws who are great grandparents for the first time.
