Unlike one hundred, or even fifty, years ago, the largest demographic of Christians today is women from the Global South (Africa, Latin America, and Asia), the majority of whom are poor, uneducated, and young (Source: Philip Jenkins, The Next Christendom, 2011). This is very evident here in Cameroon where we live and serve. Go to any church on a Sunday morning, and one immediately notes that the majority of attendees are women. These women are dedicated to God, their families, and each other. They work extremely hard just to feed and educate their families.

The Women’s Department of the Cameroon Baptist Convention, under the direction of Caroline Fubam, has a membership of more than 25,000 women. Under the ministry theme of “Let your light so shine . . .” these women regularly study the Word of God and serve and support each other and their communities. Susanne serves as the expatriate missionary advisor to the CBC Women. She recently participated in a leadership workshop with the Women’s Executive Team. A need arising out of the ongoing civil conflict in Cameroon is the well-being of teen girls and young women. The war has displaced thousands of young women, who find themselves out of school, in unfamiliar places, and in greater risk of abuse. The CBC Women’s Department has taken up the challenge to address this need by opening home economic and vocational training centres. While still in the development phase, these centres will minister to the spiritual, emotional, and vocational needs of young women, addressing the challenges of displacement and trauma long after the war is over.

We continue to participate in facilitating Trauma Healing and Resilience Workshops. Three workshops were recently held in April. The testimonies of participants emphasizes to us the need for such workshops to continue.
