May God be gracious to us and bless us & make his face shine on us, so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.
The catalclysmic changes that have happened this year and the effect it has had upon anyone in ministry is mind boggling. Scores of international students who never returned from winter break, classes by video only, and those who enrolled but could not come have changed the landscape of what and how we have done ministry. Campuses are closed, with advisors desiring that we have no meetings with students, including one-on-one sessions with students. Imagine having your kids thousand of miles from home and no way for them to get back, even though they have no school, many with their funds running short and some even going to food banks just to survive.
BUT! The wonder of the world wide web! Just a generation ago this was not possible, but today you can communicate face-to-face anywhere in the world with Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, WeChat, and WhatsApp, to name a few. Students stay in touch with family daily, and we’ve been able to have our Conversation Corner online weekly and even held our ICF weekly instead of monthly. It has been with small groups of students, but it is what we have now. We’ve even had former students now living back home who have joined us. Several of my meetings are also online one-on-one. I pray that this is temporary rather than a “new normal.”
In March, the Salt Lake area experienced a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that shook us good for about 15 seconds. Many here in Utah are wondering what “God” is saying. I’m not a guy looking for signs and wonders, but the trumpet was knocked out of the hands of the golden “Angel Moroni” statue perched on the highest point of the iconic Salt Lake City Temple. Within the week they called back all their international “missionaries” because of COVID-19. You wonder what the Lord was trying to communicate to this culture here and to the rest of their worldwide followers. I personally have a good idea. . . .
Utah County is now 700,000 and has about 20 evangelical churches, most between 10 and 40 in attendance. In contrast, there’s a suburb of Dallas with a population of 100,000 that has over 50 churches and several that have thousands each week in attendance.
Our son Nate, who heads up Elevation Project here in Utah, experienced a major heart episode April 29. It is a miracle he is even alive! The outpouring of love and compassion has been wonderful.
Please read about it on the following website:
Pray for Utah! It is truly a mission field!
