A year ago last fall, a handsome and cultured man walked into our ESL Conversation Corner looking for help with his English. But beyond that, he was looking for a Christian mentor, someone who could come alongside him and help him with understanding our culture and way of life here in the US. He wanted someone to disciple him and pray together with him on how God might use him in the future. Why me? Why would God choose me?
As our friendship grew, he began to share with me that he had held high government positions in his home country. As a believer, the Lord had burdened his heart for the downtrodden and the injustices of the poor, so he fought against this human slavery and brought them running water and electricity and created jobs instead of keeping them subservient and addicted to drugs and alcohol. Yet he was pushed out of office by lies from corrupt groups in his home city.
We met together for nearly a year. This past August, my good friend moved to Washington, D.C. He is now working for a social justice organization serving as the director of his region of the world, leading the charge to stop human trafficking, abortion, religious persecution, and slavery. Please pray for him!
This fall, we moved our weekly Conversation Corner to a local mall and our monthly ICF is now held in a restaurant. Our October ICF had fourteen attend, and a student who came to Christ as a child from the Jesus film in Congo shared his powerful testimony! We also took an amazing fall hike with students.
Our hope is in the Lord and the promise of His Return!
It gives us the attitude of imminence and the need to share our faith with those whom He has placed around us. I find that many today do not believe that Jesus’s return is imminent. Peter’s epistle warns us of losing this perspective – “You should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation’” (2 Peter 3:2–4 ESV).
Recently I saw a young man sitting on the curb by our condo. He lives on a nearby street and had been kicked out of the house by his drunken mother. We talked for a bit, and to shorten the story I shared with him the Good News and he prayed to receive Christ!!! He cried when I said the angels of heaven are partying over his decision. I gave him a Bible and devotional book. We’ll be connecting. Pray for Chris and praise the Lord for his new life in Christ!
Pray for Utah! It is a mission field! The population of the two towns where we live is over 80,000, and there are only two small evangelical churches! Please pray with and for us!
Utah is now in the NAB Northwest Association. For more info, and to support this mission, or even to send a team, visit: www.elevationprojectut.com.
- For former students that face serious persecution challenges in their home countries and face difficult pressures living in Utah’s religious culture.
- For churches that would be open for video training in order to reach out to internationals in their community.
- For healing of our son Jesse’s eyes and for our son Jon who is working but has not been paid since July.
- Even in the midst of this confusing time, people are still open to the Good News of Jesus! God is still at work and drawing people to Himself!
- Our son Nate received a very encouraging report regarding his heart issue!
May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us—so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.
Psalm 67:1–2 (NIV)
