Whirlwinds of Teaching

Energy, Excitement and Enthusiasm

That’s how I would describe my summer with my colleagues, Dori Miller and Sonya Kilmartin.  It has been seven weeks of whirlwind activity.  I was so pleased when I received a heart-felt invitation to return to the Baptist Teacher Training College (BTTC) in Ndop to again teach English to these struggling teachers with very little training and desperate situations.  I was even more pleased to hear that my old friends, Dori and Sonya, wanted to help.

Sonya’s unbridled endorsement of a particular phonics program had her furiously creating materials while Dori’s creativity made science an unforgettable class.  Teaching math will never be the same for these teachers as they discovered magnetic boards, place value charts and collapsible paper 3D shapes.

We found our fellow staff members and administration to be welcoming and helpful. Giving up their summer breaks to provide this program for these teachers dwarfed our own sacrifices.

God also provided a beautiful, restful place for us to stay with delicious food and accommodating staff.  Our greatest challenge was when this Catholic resthouse had a week of silence.  We, three verbal processors, found this much more difficult than occasional lack of power and water. We have been asked to, please, return.  Who wants to join me for the summer of 2015?
